La Fortuna at Lake Atitlan: One of the Best Eco-Hotels in Guatemala

When Daniel and I travel, we always look to find those “hidden gem” type places that will give us an unforgettable experience AND, in our opinion, La Fortuna at Lake Atitlan did just that!

Staying here will make you feel like you’re in a jungle oasis…

La Fortuna at Lake Atitlan is an award-winning luxury eco-hotel nestled in the lush jungle surrounding Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. On a clear, sunny day it also boasts the most spectacular views of Volcan San Pedro and Tolimán. If you’re looking for a getaway that will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged…then this place is for you!

The Spot

  • To get here is a bit of a trek but, 100%, without a doubt worth it! Keep reading to figure out how…
  • For most travelers, you’ll arrive at the Guatemala City airport. From there you will need to take either an uber, bus, or taxi to the town of Panajachel (one of the largest towns in Lake Atitlan) it’s about 3 hours via uber/taxi
  • We suggest visiting the city of Antigua first. It’s on the way and it helps to and split up the trek to Lake Atitlan!
  • The property is only accessible by boat from Panajachel
  • From here, you can catch a private or public speed boat. La Fortuna can also arrange a boat pick up for you as well! We contacted the owners and they set up a boat for us!

The Vibe

  • La Fortuna has a private dock where guests are greeted upon arrival (with a refreshing drink!) and leads to the main reception building.
  • Check-in is super easy and the staff is so welcoming! You’ll instantly feel their one-of-a-kind efforts to make you feel at home
  • Fun Fact: the owner’s, Katherine and Steve, told us that the main reception building was inspired by the architecture they saw on their trip to Zanzibar while all  the bungalows are inspired by the homes in Bali

The Space

  • 5 unique Balinese-inspired bungalows are spread throughout the property to offer each guest a real sense of privacy. We felt like we had the place all to ourselves!
  • There is a bungalow for every budget and each one has its unique style and interior décor
  • We decided to stay at the largest bungalow, “The Master Suite #5” which includes a private pool and sun deck area to relax and watch the sunset

Eco-Travel, and Sustainability

  • La Fortuna is considered an “eco-hotel” for its amazing efforts in sustainability. Here are a few environmental practices they participate in to name a few…
  • The hotel’s chefs prepare meals for their guests every day using locally grown ingredients (most of which are from their garden!) Not to mention their coffee is grown on-site too!
  • 100% solar powered
  • No TVs, microwaves, even hairdryers on site – but there is WIFI, and light is in the bungalows by LED bulbs

All the bungalows were crafted with local materials too! Check out the upcycled wine bottle details in the walls of Master suite #5 where we stayed!

Extras and Hotel Amenities

  • 5 Unique bungalows (though only two have a view of the lake)
  • Onsite Restaurant and Bar
  • Wood Fire Hot Tub (that is ready by 4 pm every day so you can soak it all in before dinner!)
  • Kayaks and Paddle Boards are also available to use too – just ask the receptionist!

We sincerely hope you come visit this beautiful hotel on Lake Atitlan. Please check out their website to book your stay! Feel free to contact us with all your travel questions or comments below; we’d be THRILLED to hear from you!
