Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall Volcano Trek

If you haven’t heard the news, there is an active volcano in Iceland that has been erupting since March 2021. As of now, you can trek up near the actively erupting volcano and see it live in all its erupting glory! Don’t worry though, it’s an effusive volcano and therefore there is very little danger.

***UPDATE: As of September 2021 the lava flow has declined but scientist are speculating that it’s only a matter of time until activity will start up again.

For us, it was a BUCKETLIST type of adventure to see an ACTIVELY ERUPTING VOLCANO so keep reading on to discover how you can make this trip happen for yourself!

To see the volcano, you must trek about an hour to the best viewing spot. There is a live stream of it or on YouTube so that you can make the trek at the best times. We went during summer 2021 (when the midnight sun was at its peak!)

It was amazing to see the actively erupting volcano with the sun setting in the back!

For more information, please see Guide to Iceland’s Comprehensive guide to seeing the volcano for yourself!

We suggest renting a car and driving to the parking lot. It’s SUPER easy to get to!

Google map “Geldingadalir Volcano Parking 1” and it will take you to the start of the hike. Once you’re there, they have some food vendors for snacks and hot chocolate. BEWARE though, there weren’t any bathrooms so you may have to get *creative with that one.

Tips for the Trek:

  • Bring snacks and water with you! Since you’ll be sitting and marveling over the eruption, We recommend Icelandic chocolate too!
  • If you’re into photography or flying drones, this is the spot! So, bring your gear and get ready for so amazing shots!
  • Bring a blanket, warm clothing, hats, gloves, and boots. It can get cold near the top of the trek, especially when the sun goes down.
