Studalgil Canyon Hike

Planning a trip to Iceland can be super exciting! There are so many beautiful, hidden gems scattered throughout the island. Most travelers plan to drive around the famous “Ring Road”, which is a major road that encircles the island allowing you to travel around Iceland.

On our recent trip to Iceland, we opted to seek out one of Iceland’s newest attractions and most unique hikes! In recent years, Studlagil Canyon was unknown to most travelers and locals alike since it was entirely submerged under a river.

Now, people are flocking to see the magnificent basalt columns that were hidden for so long. One unique feature is the color of the stream that passes through the basalt columns.  Depending on the time of year you go, it can range from a grey color to a magnificent turquoise

Quick Tip* go during the Spring/ Summer months to get the best chance of a turquoise hue in the water.

Renting a car is your best bet, and we suggest booking it ahead of time when you arrive in Iceland. In google maps search “Studlagil Canyon Parking”, then hit GO!

From Reykjavik, Studlagil canyon is about a 10-hour drive, we suggest going on the southern part of the Ring Road so that you can hit up more attractions on your road trip!

When you arrive at “Studglagil Canyon Parking” it will take you to the “Lookout point” for the canyon and NOT, the Hike. The Hike is marked and takes about 45 min to get to the canyon.

Quick Tip: *there are two parking lots* make sure you keep driving past the first one and park at the second lot (closer to the waterfall). This saves you so much time! Check out our video for more details on how to navigate to the canyon!

Before I forget! Please, please go early! We went at around 7 am and we had the canyon all to ourselves! After 10 am the crowds start to come in and it makes it a little difficult to get that “Instagram worthy” picture.
